Mount Sinai Hospital
Foundation of Toronto - Donate Now campaign
Support from philanthropist has been critical to our Institute’s success
When Sybil Kunin was a child, medical research was a popular topic in her household. Her father was Samuel Lunenfeld, a wealthy steel magnate and real-estate developer who had a lifelong interest in medical research and established a foundation in his name in 1954. Although Mr. Lunenfeld died in 1986, Sybil, her husband Reuben and son Mitchell carried on Mr. Lunenfeld’s tradition of giving in support of the Lunenfeld.
In 1989, the Samuel Lunenfeld Foundation donated $7.5 million to the Institute. At that time, it was one of the largest gifts to medical research in Canadian history. In recognition of this gift, the Mount Sinai Hospital Research Institute was renamed the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, and the multi-million-dollar gift allowed our Institute to take flight and soar.
Ms. Kunin and her family continued to give generously to the Lunenfeld. In 2009 the Samuel Lunenfeld Charitable Foundation contributed an endowment gift of $7.5 million to our Institute.
Ms. Kunin passed away this past Sunday in Toronto. Her family’s generosity underscores the critical importance of donor support—advances at our Institute would not be possible without the ongoing generosity of donors such as Ms. Kunin, and to them we are deeply grateful.
