One in five Canadians suffer from chronic pain – where pain causes reduced quality of life, lost work days and related illnesses including depression. Just how powerful is the mind over matter in mitigating pain and overcoming illness?
Significant research has explored the role of the placebo effect in drug and non-drug therapies for common and complex illnesses and injuries. What role does the placebo effect play in current therapies and patient outcomes? An individual’s perception of pain may also be mitigated by the placebo effect. What are the issues surrounding the psychology of pain, differences in pain perception, and methods of pain management?
Mount Sinai Hospital and the Ontario Science Centre invite you to a Café Scientifique where we’ll explore the latest research and new findings in pain management and the role of the placebo effect.
When: Monday Nov. 14, 6-8 pm
Where: Duke of York pub, 39 Prince Arthur Avenue
·         Dr. Allan Gordon, Director and neurologist, Wasserman Pain Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital
·         Dr. Edward Shorter, History of Medicine Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto
