Genetic Tools Workshop:MANIPULATING STEM CELLS THROUGH TRANSGENICS7-9 July 2014, Toronto
|
|
The Nagy lab strives to design and implement transgenic systems for the manipulation of gene expression during in vivo development and in vitro models. In partnership with Stem Cell Network, we are running this workshop for trainees who want to advance their biological knowledge and research projects through the use of cutting edge transgenic technologies. Taught skills will primarily focus on two opposing tasks, (i) the overexpression of genes and (ii) the knockout of genes.
The taught techniques are valuable to both human and mouse stem cell research, modifying cells through a transgenic approach. The workshop will be 60% bench work and 40% classroom (talks and in silico analysis). By the end of the workshop trainees will be knowledgeable in designing and generating appropriate expression constructs and CRISPR-based knock-outs. The course is tailored so that participants actually design and generate constructs for their very own research projects.
The maximum number of participants for the course is 16. This ensures that trainees can experience maximal hands-on experience during the practical sessions with expert advice along the way. We anticipate a high demand for such a unique course and as such an application process is required.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR WORKSHOP APPLICATION - Thursday MAY 8, 2014 (Midnight sender's time)
Successful applicants will be notified how to register for this workshop by June 1st, 2014:
Registration fees
Stem Cell Network (SCN) Trainees: $500
Non-SCN Trainees/Industry: $1000
**Registration fees cover the cost of all meals during the workshop, and the cost of reagents used to generate constructs that trainees can take back to their labs.
Travel bursaries are available for eligible participants through the Stem Cell Network. Please click here for details.
Designing personalized constructs is a major emphasis of this workshop, therefore participants will require their own laptops for the in-silico cloning sessions.
The workshop will take place in the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Toronto.
How to apply
There is just one application form that will be used to apply for the Genetic Tools Workshop and the SCN Travel Bursary (click here for the terms and conditions of the SCN Travel Bursary). Please note that travel bursaries are only available for SCN trainees from labs outside of Toronto, but all interested participants must still submit an application form.
Please download and complete the "Genetic Tools Workshop" application form, and submit to info@stemcellnetwork.ca by May 8th, 2014 (midnight sender's time).
Participants will be selected and notified by the 1st of June.
To ensure that participants benefit the most from the workshop we ask that they provide specific details in their application form on how they would like the workshop to advance their project. For example, are you looking to over-express cDNA “X” in a inducible system, or do you need to knockout gene “Z”.
We wish to thank our corporate sponsor Life Technologies for supporting this workshop
