Lunenfeld scientist awarded prestigious Harvard fellowship to advance neuroscience research

May 16, 2013

Congratulations to Dr. Mei Zhen, Senior Investigator at Mount Sinai’s Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, on being selected as a fellow by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University for the 2013–2014 academic year. Dr. Zhen is among the 49 chosen leading artists and scholars pursuing an innovative, cross-disciplinary project at Harvard.

With this fellowship, Dr. Zhen will be able to work with physicists, computational biologists and neuroscientists to develop a better understanding regarding the anatomic development and functional maturation of motor controls.  Dr. Zhen’s own transformative research is laying the groundwork for effective future therapies that will help restore coordination and smooth movement for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s and ALS.

In a recent major discovery, Dr. Zhen and her team at the Lunenfeld found that higher degrees of functioning such as muscular coordination can be actually achieved through activating local regions of the body's nervous system. Through internet communication and frequent travels, Dr. Zhen’s lab and the team in Harvard will combine forces to complete this ambitious fellowship project.

“I am honored to be selected as a recipient for this prestigious fellowship,” says Dr. Zhen. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with world-renowned scientists in math, computational biology and physics to further advance our understanding in muscular control and movement.”

The Radcliffe Institute has awarded nearly 650 fellowships since its founding in 1999.
