About Men and Fathers

Overall, as a result of differences in mortality, women outnumbered men slightly in the total population in Canada, in 2001. The census counted 14.7 million men and 15.3 million women, a ratio of 96 men for every 100 women. At birth, the ratio is 105 boys for 100 girls. The gap between the sexes was most pronounced among seniors aged 65 years and over.

In 2001, there were 75 senior males for every 100 senior women, up from 72 in 1991. Prior to 1991, the ratio of men to women had been declining steadily since 19o51 when it was virtually one-to-one. Before 1951, senior men had outnumbered their female counterparts, to a great extent because of maternal mortality.

The number of men in the U.S. aged 18 years and older was 98.9 million, in 2000.

The projected life expectancy for men in 2000 was 74 years.

Sonora Dodd initiated the idea of a "father's day", in order to honour her father, William Smart, who was a Civil War veteran and left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

U.S. president Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. In 1966, Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

"One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters." English Proverb

"I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection." Sigmund Freud

"Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father." Lydia M. Child

"I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example." Mario Cuomo

"Be kind to they father, for when thou wert young,

Who loved thee so fondly as he?

He caught the first accents that fell from they tongue,

And joined in thy innocent glee." Margaret Courtney
