I am a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Nagy’s lab, at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Sinai Health, Toronto, Ontario. After completing my undergraduate studies at the University of Technology, in Darmstadt, Germany, I pursued an interdisciplinary diploma study and joined the research group of Cheryle Seguin at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London, Ontario, in late 2009. I was co-supervised by Dr. Silvia Mittler, Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at UWO. In early 2011, I started in Dr. Nagy’s lab as a graduate student and successfully defended my PhD thesis entitled ‘Combined Cell and Gene Therapy towards the Treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy’ in December 2017. My thesis involved the generation of pluripotent stem cell derived RPE cells with inducible VEGF Sticky-trap expression and the assessment of these cells in, in vitro and in vivo, safety and efficacy studies. I decided to stay in Dr. Nagy’s lab to continue my project, funded by the Fighting Blindness Canada foundation, to derive novel treatment options for blindness causing eye diseases, such as AMD, and establish a translational path of my studies to the clinic.
