Mohammad Izadifar, Research Associate



Dr. Mohammad Izadifar (Ph.D.) is a Biomedical Engineering scientist with a robust interdisciplinary research expertise and academic background. His research combines stem cell technology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomedical imaging and microfluidic systems (organs-on-chip) to address challenges in translational medicine. He has gained recognition in his field due to the development of 3D-bioprinted tissue substitutes, organ-on-chip platforms and a novel synchrotron-based medical imaging technique.

During his postdoctoral research at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, he has extended his research experience to a larger area of cell-based therapy that includes induced Allogenic Cell Tolerance technology and FailSafeTM cell therapy to treat different diseases. Currently, his research focuses on (i) engineering fail-safe β-like designer cells for treatment of type 1 diabetes, (ii) development of the human stem cell-based tissue chips for high throughput cardiovascular disease modeling and safety pharmacology, (iii) development of a perfused microfluidic-based 3D tissue culture for early screening of FailSafeTM cell therapy, and (iv) development of a dynamic glucose stimulated insulin secretion assay-on-a-chip for in-vitro assessment of pluripotent cell-derived β-like designer cells. Dr. Mohammad Izadifar is a member of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society (TERMIS), the Society for Biomaterials (SFB), the Stem Cell Network (SCN) and the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR).
