Sabiha Hacibekiroglu, PhD, is a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Andras Nagy. She completed
her PhD in Medical Science at the University of Toronto, and has a background in stem cell biology and
interdisciplinary research spanning Germany, Canada, and Australia.
Her work focuses on developing next-generation cell and gene therapies for retinal diseases. By
integrating SafeCell technology with immune-evasive strategies and a novel VEGF “Sticky-Trap”
approach, she aims to create minimally invasive, durable, and controllable treatments for age-related
macular degeneration (AMD) and beyond. This work is supported by a Fighting Blindness Canada–
funded grant, on which she serves as a co-applicant and author. The project has progressed to an initial
pre-CTA meeting with Health Canada, reflecting her commitment to advancing these therapies toward
clinical application.
