Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering, while playing Division I soccer, at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan in April of 2020. As a bioengineer fascinated by the idea of manipulating and re-writing our own code of life through genome editing, I was inspired to pursue undergraduate research under the supervision of Dr. Mi Hye Song in the Department of Biological Sciences. My research investigated the genetic and molecular mechanisms of centrosome assembly and regulation in the context of genetic diseases in a C. elegans model using the CRISPR-Cas9 system. During my undergraduate studies, I developed an interest in the prospect of applying novel biological engineering strategies to combat and develop solutions to human diseases. The innovative and ground-breaking research being performed by the Nagy Lab, aimed at discovering ways to use cells as therapeutic tools, will allow me to directly pursue this interest. I am excited to join the Nagy Lab as a master’s student with the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto.
